New Zealand Journal of Ecology (1997) 21(2): 161-167 ©New Zealand Ecological Society numbers of rabbits killed and how these vary amongst patches of relatively high and low abundance are not usually assessed. Understanding this spatial variability is potentially important in predicting the spatial variation in impacts of standard control operations and sources of subsequent resurgence in rabbit abundance. An understanding of absolute rabbit abundance will give us a greater insight into rabbit-predator interactions. This is needed for determining whether the interaction between rabbit and predator numbers is an important predictor of the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (Ragg, Waldrup and Moller, 1994). Measures of absolute abundance of rabbits will provide baselines for the study of the impact of Rabbit Calicivirus Disease (RCD) on the predatorprey relationships between introduced predators, rabbits and alternative prey species (Moller, Norbury and King, 1996; Norbury and Murphy, 1996). Accurate measurements of absolute rabbit density can be used also to assess the reliability of indices of abundance. This study was conducted in conjunction with spotlight counts of rabbits along transect lines (Fletcher et al., 1995). Spotlight counts gave an imprecise estimate of relative density HENRIK MOLLER, B. KAY CLAPPERTON and DAVID J. FLETCHER 1 Department of Zoology, University of Otago, P.O. The distribution of the cardiac veins in the New Zealand White rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
In this investigation, 25 adult New Zealand White rabbits randomly selected from both sexes and studied.Coloured latex injection and corrosion cast methods were applied on the materials. This study was carried out to disclose the distribution of the cardiac veins of the New Zealand White rabbits. The veins that drain the heart were found to be the great cardiac vein, the middle cardiac vein, th...

The aim of this study was to detect the regional and mucosal distribution of endocrine cells that secrete gulcagon, somatostatin, Chyholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8), serotonin, secretin, substance P (SP) and histamine in the small and large intestine of New Zealand white rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.) using immunohistochemical peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) method. It was found that most of the im...
متن کاملDistribution and relative frequency of immunohistochemically detected endocrine cells in the stomach of New Zealand White rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
Background: Gastrointestinal (GI) endocrine cells produce many GI hormones that perform various physiological functions of the digestive system. Aims: We aimed to investigate the presence and distribution of immunoreactive (IR) endocrine cells to glucagon, somatostatin, cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8), serotonin, secretin and histamine in the stomach of adult male Ne...
متن کاملModelling Landscape-Level Numerical Responses of Predators to Prey: The Case of Cats and Rabbits
Predator-prey systems can extend over large geographical areas but empirical modelling of predator-prey dynamics has been largely limited to localised scales. This is due partly to difficulties in estimating predator and prey abundances over large areas. Collection of data at suitably large scales has been a major problem in previous studies of European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and their...
متن کاملAntebrachial chondrodysplasia in New Zealand white rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus).
Rabbits obtained from a South African rabbit breeder exhibited deformities of the distal forelimbs. The clinical, radiological and histological presentation of mid-antebrachial valgus formation (a.k.a distal foreleg curvature) in these rabbits was consistent with an autosomal recessive trait associated with a chondrodystrophic lesion of the distal ulna epiphysis 1st described in the 1960s. The ...
